THE DUNGEON

1 on 1 with DRIVE Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach Isaac Payne

DRIVE: When is the best time to start weight training?
Josh Trott, 13, McRoberts, Junior Team

IP: Research has shown that for most young athletes (12-17) due to lower hormone levels, weight training has a minimal effect on MUSCLE GROWTH but it can increase MUSCULAR STRENGTH to a certain degree. As young athletes mature (18-21), hormone levels increase and this allows the body to be much more responsive to weight training. However, it is far more important for young athletes to focus on speed/agility, core strengthening, flexibility, balance and coordination as these attributes make up the foundation of becoming a great athlete.

DRIVE: Will weight training affect my jump shot?
Sunny Gill, 14, Tamanawis, Junior Team

IP: Weight training in general will not affect your jump shot, but IMPROPER WEIGHT TRAINING PROGRAMS that are basically bodybuilding programs can have an adverse affect on not only your jump shot but all of your movement patterns due to excessive muscular bulk. You must always remember that you are athletes first and as athletes you must ensure your strength or weight training programs are basketball specific that way you can make large gains in strength and power without having to compromise your athleticism or the way you play the game.

DRIVE: How do I best increase my vertical jump?
Spencer Sangara, R.C. Palmer, Junior Team

IP: Jumping ability is one of the most sought after attributes by any basketball player and can be increased in a number of ways. Probably the most effective way to improve vertical jumping ability is through PLYOMETRIC TRAINING. This involves various types of exercises designed to increase the strength and elastic power of the legs. Exercises such as jumping off two feet and touching the backboard as many times as you can in 20 seconds, bounding for height and distance or single leg hopping drills can be highly effective. Speed training may also be an effective way to increase jumping ability as this can help to develop the explosive power in the legs.
