Winston Brown was born and raised in BC. While in elementary school at University Hill, Winston was introduced to soccer and basketball, quickly becoming addicted to both. In high school at Kitsilano, he continued his love for basketball, but exchanged his interest for European football for the North American version. Following high school Winston pursued many opportunities, which included coaching both basketball and football.

School Background
Winston has earned a Bachelors degree in English (Language) and was honoured as a UBC Gold Key student for finishing in the top 10% of his class. Following in his mother’s footsteps, he went on to receive a Bachelors degree in Education and was awarded the prestigious Dr. Maxwell Cameron Memorial Medal for excellence in secondary education. In the future, Winston’s interest in coaching will probably lead him to complete a Master’s degree in coaching. As he continues to grow and develop as a coach and teacher, his goal is to avoid complacency by actively pursuing innovative and dynamic ways to engage young athletes and students.
Coaching Accomplishments
Winston started coaching at the Junior level in Vancouver (Prince of Wales Secondary School) in 1995, where they won the City Championships. Since then he has gone on to coach Senior Girls at Lord Byng and Kitsilano Secondary Schools, as well as York House School. In that time his teams have won six Vancouver City Championships, eight Lower Mainland Independent School Championships, and seven Lower Mainland Championships. At BC Provincial Championships his teams have placed 5th (1999) and 8th (1997) at the AAA level and has been in the AA finals seven straight years (2004 – 2010) and won the final game four times (including bringing home the title in 2010). In the summer of 2006, Winston coached the Zone 5 (Vancouver and North Shore) U14 girls team at the BC Summer games, where they won gold (the first in the zone’s history). That same year, Basketball BC recognized Winston for his excellence in coaching achievement by presenting him with the Basketball BC Women’s Coach of the Year Award.
DRIVE Basketball
Winston’s passion is developing challenging touring schedules for his DRIVE club teams. Regardless of playing level, he wants his athletes to set goals and be placed in competitive situations where they are able to assess their own progress and (hopefully) set newer, loftier goals. He began coaching in 1995 and gained experience working in camps at UCLA (SUCCESS Basketball), Victoria, UBC, SFU, as well as creating his own in Vancouver. In 2004, Winston saw a lack of opportunities for athletes to experience elite basketball during the spring and summer, so he helped to create Triple Threat Basketball. The success of Triple Threat, motivated many athletes and coaches to create and develop their own club programs. In keeping with his desire to work with and be involved with those that he considered the best around, Winston merged Triple Threat with DRIVE, and has been blown away by the results. In describing his new relationship with DRIVE, and coaches Pasha and Chad, Winston says, “It is nice to be motivated and driven by your peers. The work that Chad and Pasha put in with their athletes is inspiring. They’ve set pretty high expectations for our program’s future and I’m excited to be a part of all of it.” As DRIVE grows and becomes more multifaceted as a club program, Winston is hoping that he will be able to contribute all of his experience in a productive way. Last year, Winston coached a very talented DRIVE U15 team that was able to capture the inaugural BC U15 Club championships. This is, hopefully, the first step towards a very successful future.
