"Brent is deceptively quick for his size.  He has the ability to knock it in from deep and put the ball on the floor at the same time.  He has a bright future in basketball and will definitly be one of the top players in BC come next year."

-Chad CLifford, U-17 Assistant Coach

(Pictured:  Brent Malish is one of the top Juniors in BC this year playing for the Brookswood Bobcats. He is currently averaging 30 points and 14 rebounds for the Langely school.  He was 1 of 3 under aged players who represented the U-17 boy provincial team at the Nationals this summer.  Here he goes up for a block shot against a Saskatchewan player during tournament play at the Nationals.  Look for Brent on our list of Top Underclassmen.)

Q & A WITH BRENT MALISH

DRIVE:
When did you start playing basketball?

BM: I started playing when I was about 8 years old, just shooting in my driveway with my dad. I played in a YMCA league in Langley when I was in grade 4 and 5.  Then when I was in grade 7 I played on a South Langley Select team. I started to get serious about basketball in grade 8.

DRIVE:
As an elite athlete, who do you try to model your individual game after and why?

BM: I try to model my game after Larry Bird. The skills that he had when he was on the court were unbelievable. He rebounded hard, he gave great passes and he was an outstanding shooter. Also he was a fearless competitor for his team.

DRIVE: Who’s your favorite player in the NBA?

BM: My favorite player in the NBA would have to be Kevin Garnett. His intensity on both ends of the court is unbelievable. He's an all-star but he's also one of the best defenders in the league. Plus he's a triple-double threat every night.

DRIVE: To this point in your career, what has been some of your favorite experiences play ball?

BM: My favorite experience playing basketball would have to be playing for the U-17 team this past summer for Coach Allen, Coach Goulet and Coach Clifford. The guys on the team were unbelievable. I learned a lot from everyone on the team. We had a lot of fun as a team throughout the summer. We won so that added to the fun. We came up a bit short in the end but it was still my favorite experience playing with this team.

DRIVE: What are some of your goals for this season?

BM: My personal goals for this season are to keep improving in every aspect of my game, especially my shot and my ball-handling. I would also say that making the U-17 team again is a goal of mine. Our team goals are to improve on every game. If we do that everything will take care of itself. But we would like to be still playing when it gets into March. We want to win league, then make Fraser Valleys, then make provincials. We are still a young team but we feel we can play good basketball when it counts. Our squad is playing good team basketball, which is priority number 1. As for me, I'm a captain of our young team so I need to set an example for the younger guys on the court and in the classroom.

DRIVE: How was your experience playing on the provincial team this past summer?

BM: Playing on a provincial team as a younger player was an awesome experience for me. I learned so much from the coaches and the players. I gained some valuable knowledge and skills from playing and practicing with the older guys.

DRIVE: What are some of your future goals in basketball?

BM: My future goals in basketball would be to get an athletic scholarship to a university. That has been one of my goals for a long time.

DRIVE would like to wish Brent and his Brookswood teammates the best of luck this season.
